Europe's cheapest city breaks: Albania's Tirana tops list under 100 euros daily

Travelers seeking affordable European getaways can find excellent value in cities like Tirana, Albania, which has been identified as the most budget-friendly destination for short city breaks.

A recent analysis by travel agency Thomas Cook, covering over 50 popular destinations, found that Tirana offers an average daily cost of just 59 euros per person. This figure includes accommodation in a three-star hotel, which averages 32 euros per night, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant for around 8.50 euros, and a local beer for a mere 1.50 euros.

The study considered various expenses, such as hotel stays, meals, coffee, daily public transport tickets, and entrance fees for attractions. The findings highlight a trend toward more affordable travel options in Eastern Europe and Turkey, as global travel habits shift and long-haul flights become more expensive due to rising fuel costs.

Following Tirana, Bucharest in Romania ranks second with average daily costs of 66 euros. Turkish cities also feature prominently, with Antalya and Istanbul making the top five. Istanbul, in particular, offers affordable hotel stays around 28 euros per night and meals between eight and nine euros. The report notes that these Eastern European and Turkish urban destinations consistently provide accessible prices, suggesting they may not remain hidden gems for long as tourist numbers grow.
