Europe's Most Fairytale Destinations for 2026 Named; One is a Gem of Former Yugoslavia

A new list of Europe's most fairytale destinations for 2026 has been released, featuring a mix of iconic landmarks and hidden gems that evoke magical scenes. These locations, where people still live and work amidst historic streets and natural landscapes, were selected by the tourism platform European Best Destinations.

The selection process began with an evaluation of over 4,200 European locations. Experts and global travelers then narrowed this down to 68 destinations based on criteria such as historical value, atmosphere, authenticity, culture, and overall visitor experience. Finally, travelers cast their votes to determine the top 10.

Among the destinations recognized is Germany's Eltz Castle, which rises above the Moselle Valley and has belonged to the same family for over 850 years, remarkably never destroyed in war. Mont Saint-Michel in France, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the Normandy coast, is dominated by a Benedictine abbey and offers dramatic views as the tide changes the surrounding landscape.

Spain's Tossa de Mar presents a different side of the Costa Brava, a former fishing village distinguished by its well-preserved medieval walls, the Vila Vella, overlooking a sandy beach and the Mediterranean Sea. The city was once called "Blue Paradise" by painter Marc Chagall and continues to attract artists today. Other notable locations include The Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland, a famous beech avenue from the 18th century; Riga, Latvia, praised for its blend of medieval streets and Art Nouveau architecture; Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle, built by King Ludwig II; and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, known for its beauty.
