Europe's tallest Virgin Mary statue erected in Poland

Poland, a stronghold of Catholicism, now boasts Europe's tallest statue of the Virgin Mary in the village of Konotop. Standing at an impressive 55 meters, the concrete and steel figure surpasses all other European Marian statues and ranks as the second tallest globally, trailing only the Mother of All Asia statue in the Philippines.

This is the tallest statue of the Virgin Mary in Europe. Perhaps somewhere in Asia there is one that is taller, but it is measured differently, as it is located on an embankment, on top of a hill. This is a complete reinforced concrete structure, which includes the figure of the Virgin Mary and the crown, which also serves as an observation deck... The view is spectacular.

The official inauguration is scheduled for August 15, following a blessing ceremony on the Feast of the Assumption. However, the site is still under construction, with concrete blocks and debris scattered around the muddy parking area. Despite the unfinished state, the monument has already attracted significant attention, with buses full of visitors arriving regularly, according to the statue's caretaker.

Director of Visova Mosti, the main contractor, Tomaš Džurni, highlighted the statue's robust construction and the spectacular view from the crown, which also serves as an observation deck. The project, costing approximately 100 million zloty (about $22 million), was financed by billionaire Roman Karkošik. While many religious visitors are unfazed by the cost, some local residents express reservations, questioning whether such a large statue is the most appropriate representation of the Catholic faith in a country already rich in religious monuments.

Residents of Konotop, however, hope the new statue will become a major pilgrimage center, drawing numerous visitors and generating substantial revenue for the area. The construction, which began in March 2025, is reportedly a fulfillment of a religious vow by Karkošik and his wife. Local officials are optimistic that the project will stimulate economic development and bring financial benefits to the region, potentially rivaling the draw of Poland's most famous Marian site, the Black Madonna in Częstochowa.
