European Parliament condemns Russian drone incursions into EU airspace, urges more Ukraine aid

The European Parliament has strongly condemned Russia's recent drone incursions and airspace violations within the European Union. In a resolution adopted on Thursday, lawmakers warned that these actions are part of a wider Russian strategy to intimidate and destabilize EU member states and their Western allies. The document, passed with 412 votes for, 63 against, and 53 abstentions, asserts that these incidents are not isolated but elements of a coordinated campaign by Moscow.

MEPs argue that Russia bears full responsibility for these actions, which they consider a direct threat to the security, resilience, and sovereignty of the EU and its member states. The resolution also condemns Belarus's involvement, accusing its regime of participating in hybrid attacks against the EU. "The Parliament declares that the EU will not be intimidated by Russia's campaign and is united in its determination to defend the security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of all EU member states and to continue to support Ukraine," the adopted document states.

The Parliament expressed solidarity with Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania, whose territories, airspace, or critical infrastructure have been targeted by hybrid provocations attributed to Russia. Lawmakers believe these incidents aim to create tensions and identify vulnerabilities in NATO's defense and surveillance systems. The resolution calls for accelerated production and delivery of essential military equipment to Ukraine, including air defense systems, ammunition, drones, and missiles. It also emphasizes the importance of cooperation with Moldova to counter threats from Russian drones and urges member states to increase funding for Chisinau through the European Peace Facility.

Furthermore, the European Parliament is calling for the urgent creation of a genuine European Defense Union, stressing that deeper integration, coordinated capabilities, and shared resources are essential to respond to growing threats from Russia. MEPs also demand the strengthening of the EU and NATO's eastern flank, from the Arctic to the Black Sea, across land, sea, and air, to effectively counter drone incursions and other hybrid challenges.
