European Parliament: Serbia must show true commitment to EU values, fair elections needed for political crisis

The European Parliament has emphasized that Serbia's path toward European Union membership is contingent upon significant reforms in the rule of law and the strengthening of democratic standards. In a statement released on social media, the Parliament stressed that Serbia must demonstrate a genuine commitment to EU values for progress to be made. Free and fair elections were identified as a crucial element for resolving the ongoing political crisis within Serbia. The Parliament's message highlighted that only through such electoral processes can the nation move forward constructively and meet the democratic benchmarks required for accession. Furthermore, the European Parliament reiterated the necessity for Serbia to normalize relations with Kosovo. This normalization is presented as a key condition that Serbia must fulfill alongside its internal reforms to advance its bid for EU membership. The Parliament also provided a graphic noting Serbia's status as an official EU candidate since 2012, its population of 6.6 million, and its per capita GDP of 13,526 euros.
