European prosecutors search offices linked to far-right parties over alleged fund embezzlement

European prosecutors have launched a significant investigation into alleged embezzlement of European Parliament funds, conducting searches in France, Spain, Italy, and Belgium. The probe targets the former 'Identity and Democracy' (ID) political group, a far-right bloc that dissolved in 2024 and whose members have since regrouped under the 'Patriots for Europe' banner. This action casts a shadow over the rising far-right movement across the continent.

The investigation was prompted by a report from the European Parliament's financial unit, which found that the ID group had "improperly spent" €4.3 million of its EU funding between 2019 and 2024. A substantial portion, €3.1 million, was allegedly funneled to two companies for services like magazine printing and social media management, which the report deemed unrelated to parliamentary activities. Concerns were also raised about these contracts being awarded without competitive bidding, and the involvement of relatives of prominent National Rally politicians.

This crackdown comes at a critical juncture, with far-right parties gaining traction in several European nations. In France, National Rally leader Jordan Bardella is currently leading in presidential election polls. Bardella has accused the investigation of being politically motivated, timed to disrupt the electoral calendar. However, the party faces further scrutiny, as Marine Le Pen, another key figure, is awaiting a verdict in her own embezzlement case.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) stated that the investigations are part of a broader inquiry into how EU funds were utilized by former political groups within the European Parliament. The searches targeted service providers contracted by the ID group, including their offices and private residences. The outcome of this investigation could significantly influence the political landscape in Europe, potentially dampening the momentum of far-right parties.
