Eurostar train stalls in Belgium; three passengers hospitalized

A Eurostar train en route from Cologne, Germany, to Paris, France, experienced a technical failure and came to a standstill near Heverlee, a district of Leuven, Belgium, on Tuesday morning. The train was carrying around 400 passengers when it stopped around 10:45 AM near the Tivoli bridge.

Emergency services, including firefighters and medical personnel, were dispatched to the scene. They distributed water to passengers as temperatures rose. Three individuals were transported to Gasthuisberg University Hospital as a precautionary measure, primarily due to the heat, according to police spokesperson Marc Vranckx. Their conditions are not serious.

The remaining passengers were transferred to another Eurostar train, which brought them to Leuven station. From there, they were able to continue their journeys. Eurostar confirmed that all passengers were safely evacuated and would receive further assistance, including water, at Leuven station before proceeding towards Brussels.

The disruption also impacted Belgian rail network (NMBS) services. Two trains traveling from Eupen to Ostend were halted behind the stalled Eurostar but were able to return to Ans station. Rail traffic is being rerouted via the Hasselt-Leuven line, which is already experiencing delays due to a separate incident involving a train and a tractor in Hasselt. Both incidents are contributing to significant travel delays in the region.
