EV5 beats Model Y in German expert review but lags in sales

In Germany's electric SUV market, the Kia EV5 has outscored the Tesla Model Y in a recent evaluation by the German auto magazine "Auto Motor und Sport." The EV5 achieved an overall score of 588 out of 1,000 points, surpassing the Model Y's 557 points and securing the top position among tested vehicles, including the Xpeng G6 and MG S6 EV.

The EV5 particularly excelled in safety and ease of operation, areas where it significantly outperformed the Model Y. In safety tests, the EV5 scored 89 points compared to the Model Y's 60, demonstrating superior braking performance. The EV5 stopped within 35 meters from 100 km/h in both initial and repeated braking tests, while the Model Y required longer distances.

Beyond safety, the EV5 also received higher marks for its interior space and user-friendly controls. While the Model Y held advantages in price, energy efficiency, and charging speed, the EV5 offered a better daily user experience in terms of cabin comfort and handling. However, sales figures paint a different picture, with the Model Y selling over ten times more units than the EV5 in Germany during the first half of 2024.
