Evacuation ordered as wildfire engulfs Madrid municipality

A rapidly spreading wildfire in Madrid has forced the evacuation of the municipality of Cenicientos and its environs, as the blaze appears to have a life of its own. What began as three separate fronts has merged into a single, destructive force that is consuming everything in its path.

The fire advanced with alarming speed towards the Advanced Command Post (PAM), located on a hill overlooking the town, which served as the operational hub for coordinating firefighting efforts. The PAM, previously situated near the cemetery and municipal funeral home, had to be dismantled and moved due to the extreme danger posed by the encroaching flames. The sky turned orange, and a thick haze enveloped the area, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The decision to dismantle the command post was interpreted as a clear indicator of the dire circumstances. Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso was interrupted during a press conference by Government Delegate Francisco Martín, who announced the evacuation order for Cenicientos. Residents were instructed to leave the area in an orderly and calm manner. Within an hour, all equipment was packed up.

Residents of Cenicientos and nearby areas had anticipated a similar fate to the 12 other municipalities in Madrid already evacuated. This massive wildfire has displaced 29,488 people and scorched an immense 24,000 hectares in Madrid alone, with an additional 45,000 hectares affected in Ávila. Aroa Boto, a 37-year-old swimming instructor who had returned to live with her parents, watched smoke fill her window and saw embers flying freely. She received a text message ordering evacuation while preparing her belongings.

As Aroa was packing her car, which was laden with her belongings, three dogs, a friend's quarter-share in a vehicle, and her friend's young daughter, she was urged by a concierge to assist two neighbors – one blind and the other without legs – along with an elderly neighbor. Within approximately 10 to 12 minutes, all necessary assistance was provided before they departed.
