Evere considers naming square after man who died intervening in tram dispute

Evere, a municipality in Brussels, is considering naming a public square after Driss Atounane, a resident who died after intervening in a tram dispute. Ridouane Chahid, president of the municipal council, submitted a motion to honor Atounane for his courageous act.

Atounane, 54, stepped in to protect a woman from aggression on a tram in late July. He was subsequently attacked and succumbed to his injuries. Chahid's motion aims to recognize Atounane's bravery and the sacrifice he made.

The proposed location for the square is near the tram stop where the tragic events unfolded, specifically at the intersection of Lindestraat, Henri Van Hammestraat, and Édouard Stuckensstraat. This location is preferred to minimize disruption from an address change and maintains a direct link to the incident.

As a backup, the council is considering a small park between Van Hammestraat and Stuckensstraat. Additionally, the municipality intends to formally request the public transport company MIVB to rename the tram stop "Linde-Driss Atounane." Chahid stated the recognition aims to "praise the civic courage, selflessness, and solidarity" shown by Atounane, acknowledging the "exceptional and heroic nature of his act" and honoring his societal commitment against indifference, violence, and racism.

The motion also emphasizes that naming the square would signify Evere as a municipality "resolutely combating all forms of racism, xenophobia, and discrimination." The proposal will be presented to Atounane's family for their consent. Separately, a proposal for a posthumous medal or decoration is being considered by the federal government, following a request from a Brussels council member.
