Evers sees difficult task as new CDU lead candidate

Stefan Evers, the current finance senator of Berlin, has been nominated as the lead candidate for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the upcoming September elections. He is set to take over the party's leadership in a challenging period, succeeding Governing Mayor Kai Wegner.

Following a meeting with CDU district chairpersons, Evers stated his readiness to assume the role, emphasizing the need for party unity, motivation, and focus on essential issues to achieve success in the campaign. He expressed gratitude for the district chairpersons' strong support. Evers acknowledged that he is taking on the lead candidacy and interim party leadership in a "particularly difficult situation."

The final decision on Evers's candidacy is expected from the CDU state executive board on Monday. Earlier in the day, Governing Mayor Kai Wegner announced his withdrawal from the lead candidacy. This decision comes after months of debate surrounding his allegedly false statements about crisis management following a major power outage in January, which had increasingly burdened the CDU's election campaign and caused significant unrest within the party.

Wegner, 53, intends to remain in office as Governing Mayor until the September election and the formation of a new Senate thereafter. Evers commented on the situation, stating, "We work, we make mistakes." He thanked Wegner for his "successful work" but noted that when discussions about mistakes overshadow the core issues, the party must collectively refocus on what truly matters for the city. Evers urged the CDU to look forward.
