Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Hsu Chiao-hsin (Zheng Liwen) recently declared on a television program that "Taiwan has never been independent, and Taiwan has never been a country. The Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) claim that Taiwan is already independent is nonsense." This statement has sparked considerable discussion.

In response, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh expressed his astonishment, noting that Hsu was the senior who "enlightened" him in his early days of opposing the KMT. He remarked on the interesting turn of events in her life's stance.

She further criticized the DPP's assertion of Taiwan's independence as the "talk of street thugs, utter nonsense," and accused the party of not daring to initiate a referendum on Taiwan's independence.
