Ex-deputy governor Gwarzo emerges Kano NDC gov candidate

Rabiu Kwankwaso, a prominent political figure and national leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, has announced the selection of Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the Kano State governorship candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor, also revealed that Nasiru Gawuna will contest for the Kano Central Senatorial seat under the NDC banner. In a statement released on Friday, Kwankwaso emphasized that these decisions were the result of extensive consultations within the party and were guided by core values of equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence.

"I am delighted to announce that His Excellency, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has been selected as our Kano NDC gubernatorial candidate for the upcoming elections," Kwankwaso stated. "Similarly, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna will contest for the Kano Central Senatorial Seat. This decision was made in the spirit of equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence, values that remain central to our party and Kwankwasiyya’s progress and unity."

Gwarzo, a close associate of Kwankwaso, previously served as the Deputy Governor of Kano State under Governor Abba Yusuf and also held the position of Commissioner for State Affairs during Kwankwaso's gubernatorial tenure. He had resigned as deputy governor following Yusuf's defection to the All Progressives Congress, subsequently joining the African Democratic Congress with Kwankwaso before their move to the NDC. Gawuna, who served as Deputy Governor under Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and was the APC's governorship candidate in the 2023 election, recently aligned with Kwankwaso and the NDC.
