Ex-lawmaker hails Tinubu for honouring Aguiyi-Ironsi

Former House of Representatives member Sam Onuigbo has lauded President Bola Tinubu for recognizing Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeria's first Military Head of State. Aguiyi-Ironsi, who was assassinated in 1966, hailed from Onuigbo's former constituency in Abia State.

I am very elated by this gesture from Mr President, not only because the late Gen. Aguiyi-Ironsi hailed from my constituency, but also because President Tinubu has continued to demonstrate committed and courageous leadership with patriotic surefootedness.

Onuigbo, who represented the Ikwuano/Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency from 2015 to 2023, described Tinubu's tribute to Aguiyi-Ironsi during the 60th anniversary of his death as a demonstration of deep historical insight. He noted that Aguiyi-Ironsi, assassinated alongside Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, was a symbol of patriotism, courage, discipline, and selfless service to Nigeria.

In a letter to the President, Onuigbo expressed elation, not only because Aguiyi-Ironsi was from his constituency but also because Tinubu continues to show committed and courageous leadership. He highlighted that the honor coincided with an upward review of salaries for serving military personnel, signaling Tinubu's dedication to the armed forces' welfare and morale.

The honour came at a time when the salaries and emoluments of serving military personnel had also been reviewed upwards, a development which has shown Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare and morale of the Armed Forces.

Onuigbo reiterated the importance of unity for Nigeria's peace, stability, and development, urging continued support for the Tinubu administration's efforts to foster a more united nation. He also commended the President for acknowledging the historical significance of the anniversary, noting that past national efforts had insufficiently recognized the sacrifices of Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi in nation-building.
