Ex-lawmaker wins Ebonyi PDP senatorial ticket

Maria Ude Nwachi, a former Minority Leader in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, has won the Peoples Democratic Party's ticket for the Ebonyi South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections. The announcement came Tuesday in Abakaliki following a direct primary held in Afikpo.

I thank all the delegates for the enormous love and support shown me at the primary election. This is just the start.

Nwachi expressed her excitement and thanked the delegates for their support. She stated that her entry into the race was divinely ordained and that her primary goal is to significantly reduce the suffering and poverty among her constituents. "All that I will tell you is that God has remembered us through my being in this race," she said.

All I need is to eliminate, or at least drastically reduce, the burdens on my people and beyond.

She attributed her opportunity to run on the PDP platform to Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, the party's gubernatorial candidate for Ebonyi State in 2027. Nwachi lauded Odii's business acumen and philanthropic efforts, including building over 300 homes for the less privileged, and urged Ebonyi residents to support him to transform the state. "Ebonyians should support him because he has all it takes to make Ebonyi State the fastest-rising state in the federation," she added.

I never planned to contest or even return to politics, but God has now ordained it.

If elected, Nwachi pledged to prioritize empowerment and development, drawing on her previous experience in public service. She assured the people of Ebonyi South of dedicated representation, aiming to make the district a model for development.
