Ex-police officer gets nearly five years for fraud scam

A former Berlin police officer has been sentenced to four years and ten months in prison for orchestrating a sophisticated fraud scheme that netted him approximately 330,000 euros. The Berlin Regional Court also ordered the confiscation of assets equivalent to this amount. The 37-year-old was found guilty of commercial fraud in 59 cases and computer fraud in nine cases, systematically targeting individuals desperate for housing.

Presiding Judge Christina von Bothmer described the defendant's actions as "highly professional." He created a "fraud system" by offering non-existent rental apartments online, impersonating employees of fictitious Berlin property management companies. Applicants were then prompted to submit personal information via email. The court heard that the man, who previously worked in a unit combating fraud, used the illicit gains to fund his "lavish lifestyle."

The fraud operated on three main fronts. The ex-officer used stolen data to open bank accounts, gain access, and drain them to their credit limits. In other instances, he exploited victims' employer information to redirect salaries under false identities. He also took out theft insurance policies using acquired data, subsequently reporting fabricated thefts to claim insurance money. The prosecution had sought a five-year sentence, while the defense argued for a maximum of four and a half years. The verdict is not yet final.
