Ex-Ukrainian minister Fedorov to advise Italy on defense innovation

Mykhailo Fedorov, the former Ukrainian Minister of Defense who was dismissed by President Volodymyr Zelensky in July amid a controversial government reshuffle, is set to take on a new role as an advisor on defense innovation to Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.

Fedorov announced on Facebook that the Italian minister proposed the position, stating, "I will help Italy develop technologies suited for modern warfare, improve its defense sector, and adapt to new global security challenges." He emphasized that he will continue to work on projects within Ukraine aimed at bolstering its defense capabilities and attracting international funding.

The Italian Ministry of Defense described the appointment as an "important opportunity" for Italy, highlighting the nation's interest in collaborating with partners who possess significant experience, particularly in autonomous systems and air defense. Fedorov, a proponent of leveraging new technologies like drones on the battlefield, had clashed with Ukraine's military command before his dismissal.

His removal from office sparked protests in Ukraine, and Fedorov subsequently became critical of President Zelensky, speaking out against corruption and what he termed a "culture of lies." He also called for elections in Ukraine, a stance opposed by Zelensky, who argued that elections during wartime would fracture the country. Zelensky's own presidential term expired in May 2024, but martial law prevents elections.

Fedorov mentioned that he and his team have begun an international tour focused on developing new projects in digitalization and defense technologies. The Ukrainian presidency has not yet commented on Fedorov's new role in Italy.
