The experience began on February 20, 2024, when his youngest daughter, Elvira, pointed out his unusual "yellow" complexion. Svensson, who had always tanned easily, attributed this to his lingering tan, unaware of the underlying health issue.

For a month prior, Svensson had been experiencing dull abdominal pain, which he believed stemmed from stress due to his busy schedule. The pain intensified after a meal, described as feeling like a "small, persistent drill bit" in his stomach. Despite the discomfort, he continued his work, including numerous author appearances and demanding literary reviews, and managed a kitchen renovation at his summer home.

His reluctance to seek medical help, a common trait among men of his generation, meant he delayed visiting a doctor. However, after developing diarrhea and a change in his stool's color, his wife, Ann-Sofi, insisted he contact their local health center. Initially expecting a dismissive response, Svensson was surprised when the nurse expressed concern and offered him an appointment.

Like many other men of my generation, I have long avoided going to the doctor – with some success.

Despite the appointment being difficult to keep due to a prior commitment in Stockholm, Svensson was advised to call for an emergency appointment the next day if needed. The narrative takes a somber turn as Svensson reflects on his doctor's subsequent prognosis, which indicated his condition was measured "in months."
