Exhibition Commemorates Kim Gu's 150th Birth Anniversary, Showcasing Maritime Independence Symbols

A significant exhibition celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of the revered independence activist Kim Gu has opened at the National Incheon Maritime Museum. Titled 'Memory Box of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, Connecting the Desire for Maritime Independence,' the event delves into Kim Gu's profound connection with the city of Incheon, where he was imprisoned twice and later found solace after Korea's liberation. The exhibition, a collaboration with the Provisional Government Memorial Hall, not only traces the history of the Provisional Government established in Shanghai following the March 1st Movement but also showcases pivotal historical artifacts. Among the highlights is the Taegeukgi flag that once adorned the Gwangjaho, Korea's first modern steamship. This flag was personally taken down and preserved by navigator Shin Sun-seong on the eve of Japan's annexation of Korea in 1910, a poignant symbol of enduring national identity and resistance. His descendants have continued to safeguard this precious artifact, now displayed to the public for the first time. The exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for independence and the enduring spirit of the Korean people, offering a unique perspective on national history through the lens of maritime heritage and the unwavering will for self-determination.
