Exiled Afghans Demand Stronger Stance on Taliban, Citing Women's Rights

Exiled Afghans are urging the international community to adopt a more resolute approach in its dealings with the Taliban regime, marking five years since the Islamists regained control of the country. At a high-profile press conference, diplomat Petritsch stressed that the dire situation of Afghan women should not be accepted and that relations with the current government should not be normalized.

The Taliban's return to power in August 2021 saw international troops withdraw, leaving the country under the control of the radical Islamist group. Since then, the regime has implemented a system of gender apartheid, severely restricting the rights and freedoms of women and girls. This has led to widespread disenfranchisement and plunged large segments of the population into poverty.

Observers note that the Taliban's current rule mirrors their previous period in power between 1994 and 2001, during which they attempted to enforce a harsh interpretation of Islamic law.
