Expert: Attacks with North Korean Missiles Not a Coincidence Amid Patriot System Uncertainty

Military expert Jörgen Elfving suggests that Russia's recent missile attacks on Ukraine, potentially using North Korean ballistic missiles, are strategically timed. This marks the first suspected use of such weapons by Russia against Ukraine in almost a year, with one missile striking a residential building in the Dnipropetrovsk region and killing a family.

North Korea's support for Russia's military efforts is not new. Reports from 2024 indicated potential large-scale ammunition deliveries from North Korea to Russia. Despite initial denials from both countries, Elfving views the recent attack as further evidence of Russia seeking allied assistance to bolster its arsenal of ballistic weapons.

Simultaneously, Ukraine is seeking to enhance its air defense capabilities. The country has expressed a strong need for the U.S.-made Patriot air defense system, particularly for civilian protection. However, U.S. President Donald Trump recently rescinded his earlier approval for Ukraine to license-produce the Patriot system.

Elfving believes Russia may be exploiting Ukraine's current air defense vulnerabilities. "Right now, when Ukraine lacks Patriot missiles, it is appropriate for them to exert pressure through these attacks," he stated. Ukraine's request for 300 Patriot missiles remains uncertain, further complicated by Trump's decision, potentially forcing Ukraine to conserve its limited missile stocks.
