Expert: How to act during bear encounters

Encountering a bear in the Swedish wilderness is a rare event, but knowing how to react can be crucial. Jens Frank, a researcher at SLU's Viltskadecenter, explains that Sweden's approximately 2,000 bears typically avoid human contact and quickly retreat when undisturbed. This natural behavior means attacks are infrequent, with only two to three people being attacked by bears annually on average.

These rare attacks most often involve individuals engaged in hunting or tracking bears, or those hunting elk in bear-populated areas. Situations where hunting dogs provoke bears and then return to their handlers also account for some incidents. Accidental encounters, unrelated to hunting, are exceptionally uncommon, occurring about once a decade. Past incidents have involved a forest surveyor, an orienteer, and someone clearing forest.

Frank notes that in Scandinavia, bears primarily attack to protect a resource, such as cubs, prey, or their den. Therefore, the primary goal in an encounter is to avoid appearing as a threat. Making noise while moving through the forest can alert bears to your presence, giving them a chance to leave the area. However, environmental factors like strong winds can sometimes prevent bears from detecting humans, leading to unexpected meetings.

If an encounter does occur, Frank advises retreating carefully while showing no signs of aggression. The dominant strategy is to increase distance slowly. Playing dead is sometimes suggested, but its effectiveness can vary depending on the specific circumstances of the attack.
