Explainer: How Chelsea sold 39 players this summer

Chelsea’s summer transfer activity did not stop at another lavish spending spree. The club also cleared out 39 players, an unprecedented wave of departures that reflects a sharper focus on managing its oversized squad and generating income from player sales.

Chelsea spent around £349 million on 11 new signings, including Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Emiliano Martínez. At the same time, 17 players left permanently and another 22 moved on loan.

The biggest permanent deal saw Enzo Fernández join Manchester City for £125 million, matching the British transfer record. Nicolas Jackson moved to Aston Villa for £65 million, while Real Madrid paid £51.8 million for Marc Cucurella. Liam Delap and Andrey Santos also featured in deals worth about £50 million each.

Several loans could bring in more money later. Mykhailo Mudryk’s move to Tottenham includes a £75 million purchase option, while Alejandro Garnacho’s transfer to Aston Villa reportedly carries a £43 million obligation. Four of the 22 loan deals include options or obligations that could generate more than £140 million in additional fees.

Chelsea’s internal calculations put summer income from departures, including loan fees, above £500 million. That would set a world record for player trading in one transfer window. BBC Sport, using figures from FootballTransfers.com founder Paul Macdonald, calculated confirmed outgoings at £382 million, excluding possible future payments tied to loan clauses or player targets. Chelsea estimates its profit from the activity at about £120 million.

The clear-out did not include four young players released by the club, and Chelsea’s website still lists a first-team squad of roughly 30 players. The club had five permanent sales worth more than £40 million. Including the Mudryk and Garnacho loan arrangements, seven deals exceeded that mark. The scale of the turnover highlights how aggressively Chelsea has continued to recruit while becoming equally determined to sell.
