Explosive-laden drone enters Bulgaria, detonates near gas pipeline

A drone laden with a substantial quantity of explosives entered Bulgaria on Saturday, detonating near the Romanian border and a critical gas pipeline without causing any injuries, according to Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev. The incident occurred near the Black Sea in the country's northeast, approximately one kilometer from a compression station of the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline that links Turkey and Ukraine.

"There are no victims," Radev stated after an emergency security council meeting. Border police in Romania first heard the drone, and a Bulgarian patrol then observed "a strong explosion accompanied by black smoke." Radev confirmed the drone carried a considerable amount of explosives, evidenced by the distant sound of the detonation and the large plume of black smoke. The aircraft crashed in a sunflower field, and authorities are working to identify its type and origin.

The prime minister indicated it was not a recreational drone but a larger apparatus, and neither Bulgaria nor Romania detected its flight prior to the explosion. "As you know, the identification and neutralization of these types of drones represent a great challenge," he added. Incidents involving drones have increased in recent months across Eastern European NATO members and Ukraine's allies, though this marks the first such event in Bulgaria. In response, Radev announced plans to redistribute border police resources for drone detection and counter-operations.
