Extreme cold alert issued as Buenos Aires feels like 0.2°C

September has arrived, but Buenos Aires is still feeling like winter. A polar air front pushed the perceived temperature in the city down to 0.2°C on Sunday morning.

At 8 a.m., thermometers showed 2.9°C, but the wind chill made it feel close to freezing. The National Meteorological Service issued a yellow alert for extreme cold in Buenos Aires City and almost all of Buenos Aires province. The warning also covered La Pampa, Córdoba, San Luis, Mendoza, Neuquén, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Corrientes and Misiones.

The cold is expected to continue across the Buenos Aires metropolitan area this week. Forecasters put Monday’s low in the city at 5°C and the high at 13°C, with minimum temperatures gradually rising to 9°C by Thursday. The maximum could reach 20°C on Thursday. Conditions are expected to feel colder in parts of the metropolitan area, including Quilmes, Ezeiza and Merlo, where temperatures of 3°C are forecast for Monday and 4°C for Tuesday.

The forecast offers one consolation: no rain is expected through the following weekend.
