Extreme Heat Threatens 2026 World Cup: Key Host Cities at High Risk

The 2026 FIFA World Cup faces a significant threat from extreme heat and humidity across its host nations, potentially impacting player performance and the overall fan experience. Beyond the high temperatures, thunderstorms also loom as a risk that could lead to match interruptions.

Cities in the southern United States and northern Mexico are identified as having the highest risk. Monterrey, for example, regularly sees June and July temperatures reach 90°F (32°C), with potential to exceed this. In the northeastern U.S., cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Boston will be in the peak of summer, experiencing temperatures between 80°F and 90°F (27°C to 32°C), further exacerbated by high humidity.

Miami is highlighted as particularly vulnerable, with average maximum temperatures around 90°F (32°C) and heat indices reaching 102°F (39°C). The situation is compounded by the fact that six of the seven scheduled matches in Miami are set to begin in the afternoon. Houston also presents an extreme combination of heat and humidity, though its matches are held in the NRG Stadium, which features a retractable roof and air conditioning. Dallas and Atlanta also have climate-controlled stadiums.

Severe thunderstorms are another concern, capable of causing significant disruptions. During the boreal summer, intense rain, lightning, and strong winds are common across much of the U.S. FIFA World Cup stadiums must adhere to local safety protocols, which can lead to temporary match suspensions if lightning is detected within a specified radius. The 2025 Club World Cup in the United States experienced delays due to such weather events, serving as a recent warning.
