Extreme Weather: Furious Storm in AMBA Sets Record for July Rainfall in 24 Hours

Buenos Aires and its metropolitan area were hit by an intense storm that brought record-breaking rainfall for July. From Friday morning to Saturday morning, locations like Villa Ortúzar in Buenos Aires city recorded 113 millimeters of rain, and Aeroparque registered 91 millimeters. These figures surpassed the previous July records set in 1976.

Meteorologist Esteban Zuccaro of the National Meteorological Service (SMN) noted that the amount of rain in 24 hours was 50% more than the average for the entire month of July. San Fernando also set a new daily record for the month with 75 millimeters, exceeding its previous record from 2009 and surpassing its monthly average. La Plata experienced 89 millimeters, breaking its 1994 record and exceeding its monthly average. Other areas in Buenos Aires province and Santa Fe also saw significant rainfall.

The storm prompted a yellow alert for Buenos Aires city and eastern Buenos Aires province. The heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding, hail, fallen trees, and power outages in various parts of the AMBA. Many streets and avenues were inundated, and some vehicles were swept away by the water, causing significant traffic disruptions.
