George Russell claimed a hard-fought victory at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, crossing the finish line just 1.611 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen at the Red Bull Ring. The Mercedes driver secured his second win of the season, recovering from a disappointing run and closing the gap in the championship standings.

Russell's triumph places him second overall, trailing his teammate Kimi Antonelli by 40 points. Antonelli, who started the race and finished third, remains the championship leader. Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, is now third in the standings, six points behind Russell.

"It's incredible to be back on the top step of the podium," said Russell, who was a pre-season favorite for the title. "Max and Red Bull were incredibly fast this weekend, so good on them. I had to push on every single lap."

The race was characterized by intense heat, with track temperatures reaching 50ºC and air temperatures at 35ºC, conditions that tested both drivers and machinery. Russell managed to defend his pole position at the start, while Verstappen battled closely with Antonelli, ultimately finishing just 0.375 seconds ahead of him.

Ferrari's performance was notably subdued, with Charles Leclerc finishing eighth despite starting second. Oscar Piastri of McLaren and Hamilton rounded out the top five.
