Fabric Fresheners Show Varied Effectiveness by Odor Type

A recent evaluation by the Korea Consumer Agency has revealed that the effectiveness of fabric fresheners in eliminating odors differs significantly depending on the type of smell and the specific product.

The agency tested eight popular fabric freshener brands, assessing their deodorizing capabilities, safety, and prices. The results, released on August 27, indicated that while some products demonstrated superior performance, others were merely average.

Specifically, five products – Double Dress Room, Bouquet Garni, Ssalim Baeks, Safra n Care, Snuggle, Aura, Febreze – received relatively high marks for their ability to remove ammonia and trimethylamine, the compound responsible for fishy odors. However, when it came to eliminating hydrogen sulfide, which causes a rotten egg smell, and methyl mercaptan, associated with rotten cabbage, all eight products performed at an 'average' level.

The most common concern for consumers, the smell of grilled meat, showed the most pronounced differences in product performance. An assessment by 21 perfumers highlighted Snuggle and Aura as having the best odor-eliminating capabilities for this specific scent.
