FACT CHECK: Queen Margrethe has been hospitalized several times

Queen Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on Sunday after feeling unwell, the Danish royal household said in a press release. She is expected to remain hospitalized during the coming week.

The queen was most recently hospitalized twice in May. The report reviews her long history of contact with Denmark’s healthcare system, beginning with a knee operation in 1992 for osteoarthritis.

Her listed medical history includes another knee operation in 1993 for a meniscus injury, surgery for gynecological cancer in 1994, further knee surgery in 2001 and 2007, and back surgery for spinal stenosis in 2003. She also underwent hernia surgery in 2006 and laser eye surgery for cataracts in 2018.

More recent admissions include major back surgery in 2023, observation after a fall in 2024, and observation for a cold in 2025. In 2026, she was hospitalized for angina and underwent balloon widening of a coronary artery. She was later admitted because of a large hematoma in the hip area caused by an earlier fall.

The latest admission followed another episode of feeling unwell. The royal household said doctors found a new hematoma in the hip area and mild dehydration.
