Failed oversight, Chic’s confrontation at Conader and Gerardo Aguirre’s shouted demands

A routine oversight visit to Guatemala’s sports authorities turned into a public confrontation when lawmaker José Chic entered a meeting of the National Council for Sport, Physical Education and Recreation, known as Conader. Gerardo Aguirre, president of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee, repeatedly shouted at Chic and demanded that he leave.

Video shared by Chic shows the lawmaker greeting Francisco Ardón, president of the Autonomous Sports Confederation of Guatemala, before approaching Aguirre and sitting beside him. Chic said he was visiting Conader and wanted to ask a few questions. Aguirre responded that neither Chic nor the person filming with him belonged in the meeting and accused the lawmaker of invading the space.

Chic said he had come as part of an oversight action and was looking for Conader’s executive director. “We are here today on an oversight matter,” he said, identifying himself as chairman of Congress’s Sports Commission. When Aguirre accused him of interrupting the council meeting, Chic replied, “I am not interrupting.” Aguirre continued to insist that he leave, also telling the person accompanying the lawmaker, “Please leave here.”

The dispute reflects a broader clash between Chic and the Olympic Committee that has continued since August. Chic has questioned how public resources were handled during the 2025 Central American Games, which Guatemala hosted, and argues that sports institutions must account for public funds. At a news conference on August 12, he said his committee had identified about Q20.4 million in transactions involving accommodation, food and other expenses that, in his view, were not properly recorded in Guatecompras. He also questioned a Q13.97 million budget increase.
