Fake Officials' Scam Targeting Bank Details Foiled in Taiwan

A Taiwanese resident narrowly escaped a sophisticated scam that impersonated officials from the National Communications Commission (NCC) and law enforcement. The elaborate deception began with a call from someone claiming to be an NCC official, alleging the victim's personal data was used to register mobile phone numbers for fraudulent purposes.

The scammers then transferred the call to an individual posing as a police detective. This fake officer accused the victim of being involved in a money laundering case, demanding the victim's bank card and password to "monitor" their accounts. To add pressure, the imposter stressed the secrecy of the investigation, warning against disclosing any details to family or bank staff, threatening charges of obstructing justice.

Subsequently, another accomplice, pretending to be a prosecutor's assistant, contacted the victim. This individual claimed the bank card and password were necessary to investigate fund flows and verify account security. Fearing severe criminal penalties, the victim complied, preparing to mail the bank card.

However, before mailing the card, the victim proactively reported the card as lost to the bank. When the scammers later demanded the victim cancel the report to proceed with their "investigation," the victim went to the bank in person. A vigilant bank teller, hearing the victim's account, recognized the signs of a scam and successfully thwarted the fraud, saving the victim's assets.
