False campaign, theft claims prompt Chadema legal response

Tanzania's opposition party, Chadema, is preparing to take legal action against individuals who are falsely presenting themselves as party leaders. The party accuses these individuals of slandering Chadema and defaming its Mainland Vice-Chairman, John Heche, following social media reports of alleged embezzlement from the 'Tone Tone' campaign.

Despite previous refutations of the embezzlement claims by Chadema Secretary-General John Mnyika, who confirmed the campaign funds were secure, several people posing as party officials have continued to demand Mr. Heche's resignation. These individuals have held press conferences and issued statements against the party and its leadership.

The culture of defaming people whilst falsely claiming Chadema leadership for personal political interests must end. We will hold them accountable through law enforcement agencies and prosecute them, as they enrich themselves by masquerading as party officials.

Advocate Dickson Matata, Chadema's Western Zone Chairman, stated that these individuals lack legitimacy and are using the party's platform for personal political gain. He emphasized that the party will use legal measures to stop the dissemination of defamatory information and hold those involved accountable. Mr. Matata noted that similar incidents have occurred in other regions, forcing legitimate party officials to issue public rebuttals.

Mr. Matata advised Mr. Heche to pursue civil defamation lawsuits against his accusers to seek damages for the unverified allegations. He also highlighted that these individuals continue to organize meetings nationwide, misleading the public and damaging the party's reputation.

I advise Mr Heche to sue everyone levying these accusations so they can substantiate their claims in court.
