Family celebrates Kabir Maharjan’s rescue after 10 days inside Trishuli 3A tunnel

After 10 days trapped inside a hydropower tunnel, Kabir Maharjan was brought out alive on Friday, giving his family a moment of overwhelming relief. Flooding in Rasuwa on August 26 had blocked the entrance to the Trishuli 3A project tunnel, leaving Maharjan and others inside.

A Nepal Army-led rescue team, supported by technical personnel, located and safely extracted Maharjan and another person. Maharjan, who worked as a supervisor at the project, was taken to Kathmandu and admitted to hospital for treatment.

His sister, Bidya Dangol, hurried to the Military Hospital in Chhauni after hearing that he had been found. She had not yet seen him when she spoke to reporters, but said she felt relieved that he was safe. “We are very happy today. I heard that my brother has been brought here. The family had spent 10 days fearing the worst. “My brother had been in there for 10 days. All of us sisters came here to see him. We had almost lost hope. We never imagined that something like this could happen,” Dangol said.

She had prayed for his safety that morning before seeing the rescue news on her phone. “He is safe. That is all that matters. We are extremely happy. There is no limit to our happiness,” she said. The rescue has also renewed hope for families awaiting news of others believed to be trapped or missing. Dangol said she was praying for everyone still inside the tunnel to be rescued safely.
