Family claims four-year-old was killed; police investigating

A cloud of grief and suspicion hangs over Rajshahi's Durgapur upazila following the tragic discovery of four-year-old Humayra Jannat's body. The young girl, who vanished while playing near her home on Friday evening, was found deceased approximately 21 hours later, sparking immediate allegations of foul play from her distraught family.

According to family members, Humayra disappeared around 5:00 PM on Friday. Despite extensive searches by police, fire service personnel, and locals throughout the night, she remained missing. The situation took a grim turn when, on Saturday afternoon, her father announced a Tk 1 lakh reward for information. Tragically, shortly after, Humayra's body was discovered beneath a date palm tree adjacent to their residence.

Primarily, it appears that the child died an unnatural death.

The family's anguish is compounded by their strong belief that Humayra was murdered. They claim to have detected a smell resembling poison emanating from her mouth and reported visible injury marks on her body. While Rajshahi Medical College Hospital spokesperson Dr. Shankar Kumar Biswas noted the absence of major injury marks, he did observe swelling in the child's abdomen and minor marks on her left hand, stating that "primarily, it appears that the child died an unnatural death."

The Daily Star reports that the body has been sent for an autopsy to ascertain the precise cause of death. Officer-in-Charge Panchananda Sarkar of Durgapur Police Station confirmed that an investigation is underway to understand how the body was found near the house after the earlier extensive searches failed to locate the child. From a Bangladeshi perspective, this incident is a deeply disturbing reminder of the vulnerability of children and the urgent need for thorough investigations into all unnatural deaths, especially those involving young victims.
