Family festival in Bredene canceled after failing to sell enough tickets

The decision comes after a significant shortfall in ticket sales, with only 1,300 tickets sold against a target of 8,000 needed to cover costs and ensure future events.

With great regret, I must announce that the Familiefestival, planned for August 22, 2026, in Bredene, will not take place.

Van Craen expressed deep regret over the cancellation, describing it as one of the most difficult decisions in his over 30-year career in the events industry. He cited financial reasons as the primary cause for the halt, despite an intensive promotional campaign. The lineup for this year's festival featured prominent Flemish artists such as Samson en Marie, LikeMe, Aaron Blommaert, Niels Destadsbader, and Metejoor.

My target was 8,000 tickets sold. I also believed we would reach it. I had clearly counted on that in the run-up to the festival to be able to secure the future, but unfortunately, it was not to be.

According to Van Craen, a key factor contributing to the low sales is the perception among potential attendees that many of the featured artists are performing for free at other coastal locations during the summer holidays. This has led to a reluctance to pay for tickets to the festival. "People ask themselves why they should pay for this event," Van Craen stated, reflecting the sentiment he has heard.

All ticket holders will receive a full refund through their original payment method, with reimbursements scheduled to begin on August 24, 2026. The organizer assured that ticket purchasers do not need to take any action themselves. The cancellation leaves a void in the local event calendar and highlights the challenges of organizing paid entertainment in a competitive coastal environment.
