Family of woman who died in e-scooter accident pleads for riders to wear helmets

The family of Shyan Lolly is pleading for increased e-scooter helmet use after she died from injuries sustained in a July 3 collision. Lolly, a 30-year-old 911 call taker, was riding an e-scooter when she collided with a vehicle. She was not wearing a helmet, hit her head, and died from her injuries on July 11.

She worked downtown at different shelters and she loved paying for homeless people’s foods or stuff like that.

Her sister, Victoria Lolly, emphasized the importance of helmets for all ages, stating, "They should wear the helmets to protect themselves in any future injuries or fatal deaths like my sister." Shyan's mother, Olivia, added that wearing a helmet could spare another family from experiencing such a devastating loss.

She was just so nice a person that we can’t imagine, we’re so devastated that she didn’t make it through the scooter collision.

Beyond the personal tragedy, the incident highlights broader safety concerns surrounding e-scooter use. Vancouver resident Miranda Boire created a public service announcement about the issue after observing young people riding scooters recklessly. She believes a stronger sense of community responsibility is needed for rider safety.

Any ages, like youth to older people, I still see them wearing no helmets. It doesn’t matter how old you are or how much you learn to drive, it’s still important to wear the helmet.
