Family reveals nurse Mary Habila died of cardiac arrest after death at minister's residence

The family of Mary Habila, a nurse who died at the residence of Works Minister David Umahi, has publicly stated the cause of her death was cardiac arrest. Habila was brought to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital in Ebonyi State on June 27, having passed away at the minister's home.

In a tribute published in her burial brochure, the family revealed that Habila had lived with a heart condition, specifically a hole in her heart. They noted that her condition worsened despite receiving medical care, prayers, and support from loved ones. "She sadly passed away following a cardiac arrest, leaving behind a deep void in the hearts of all who knew and loved her," the family stated.

The family did not provide details on how they concluded the cause of death was cardiac arrest, and reports suggest the body was buried without an autopsy. This follows a period of controversy surrounding Habila's death, which occurred on June 27 but only became public in July, sparking outrage and calls for an autopsy.

Minister Umahi had previously denied any involvement in Habila's death and had urged the family to reconsider their opposition to an autopsy, stating it would help clarify the cause amid allegations of foul play. The family, however, had insisted on burying her without a post-mortem examination, leading to delays and disputes.
