Famous climber Jake Whisenant dies at 30 after accident in Sierra Nevada

The world of mountaineering is mourning the loss of American climber Jake Whisenant, who died at 30 years old following an accident in California's Sierra Nevada. The Tulare County Coroner's Office officially classified his death as an "accident," attributing it to traumatic injuries sustained from a fall.

With the heaviest heart I share the news of the passing of my lifelong friend and confidant: Jacob Daniel Whisenant. Our family is completely shattered by this news, but we find comfort in the fact that Jake passed away doing what he loved, in the beautiful Sierra Nevada.

Whisenant was found by park rangers after a two-day search, according to a statement from the National Park Service obtained by The New York Times. His friend, Bailee Moore, shared her grief on Instagram, finding solace in the fact that Whisenant died doing what he loved.

Whisenant, who resided in Mammoth Lakes, California, with his fiancée Emma London, was celebrated for his adventurous spirit and speed climbing achievements. He and fellow climber Brant Hysell set a speed record on El Capitan's Lurking Fear route in Yosemite National Park in October 2024, completing it in under three hours. They later set another speed record on Yosemite's Washington Column in June 2025.
