Famous Croat Paid Off Loans for His Entire Village, Tried to Keep It Secret

Croatian footballer Ante Rebić has been offered a new contract by Hajduk Split, with his decision expected in the near future. This comes as the club plans a significant squad reconstruction following a season that many fans and experts deemed unsuccessful.

Hajduk Split is set to see several departures, with contracts for Anthony Kalik and Ismaël Diallo expiring on May 31 and not being renewed. Iker Almena's loan spell is also ending, with limited possibilities for an extension due to financial constraints. Zvonimir Šarlija, Filip Krovinović, and Hugo Guillamón are reportedly free to seek new opportunities elsewhere.

Rebić, who was a national hero after Croatia's 3-0 victory over Argentina in 2018, scoring a remarkable volley, has seen his career stagnate since leaving AC Milan. He has played for multiple clubs, including RNK Split, Fiorentina, Leipzig, Hellas Verona, Eintracht Frankfurt, Milan, Beşiktaş, Lecce, and most recently, Hajduk. Austrian media reported that Rebić secretly paid off the loans for all residents of his native village, Donji Vinjani. He also reportedly donated money for the construction of a rehabilitation center and over 9,000 euros to assist autistic children.
