Fan in Australian jersey catches Aussie-hit homer in 15-year first

In a unique display of Australian pride at a Major League Baseball game, an Australian fan caught a home run hit by an Australian player, marking a rare moment in the sport's history. Jack Seiple, wearing an Australian national team jersey, snagged a 122-meter home run hit by Adelaide's Curtis Mead during the Washington Nationals' 10-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians.

Seiple, an Ohio native, purchased the jersey while attending the World Baseball Classic in March. "I realized there was no-one else here, so I just decided to go for it," he told MLB.com, describing his successful catch. The moment was particularly special as it occurred during a game featuring two Australian-born players on opposing teams for the first time since 2017: Mead for the Nationals and Sydney-born Travis Bazzana for the Guardians.

Curtis Mead had a standout performance, hitting two home runs in the game, his first career multi-homer game. His first blast gave the Nationals an early lead, and his second in the fifth inning extended it. Mead is currently batting .241 this season. Bazzana, the 2024 number one overall draft pick, managed only a double in the game.

This event also highlights a growing connection between Australia and Major League Baseball. Both Mead and Bazzana honed their professional skills in the Australian Baseball League. The game also marked the first time since June 27, 2011, that two Australian-born players started on opposing MLB teams. Relievers Peter Moylan and Warwick Saupold were on opposing sides in 2017 but did not start. Currently, there are three active Australian players in MLB, including pitcher Jack O’Loughlin.
