Fans of Camilo Séptimo Plan Memorial for Jonathan “Honas” Meléndez

Fans of Camilo Séptimo are organizing a public memorial for Jonathan “Honas” Meléndez, days after the musician was killed in an attack that also claimed the lives of his family members and a domestic worker.

The gathering is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Angel of Independence on Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma. Fan groups began sharing the invitation on social media for people who had followed Meléndez’s decade-long career and considered the band’s music an important part of their lives.

Amid everything we are living through, we want to create a safe space to say goodbye, remember him and thank him for what his music meant to us.

The organizers said they wanted to create a safe place to say goodbye, remember Meléndez and express what his music had meant to them. They asked attendees to bring flowers, photographs and messages, while stressing that the event would respect Meléndez and all the victims of the tragedy. Details of the activities have not yet been announced, and it is not known whether other Camilo Séptimo members will attend.

Meléndez’s body was found on Sept. 1 at a property in Atizapán de Zaragoza, in the State of Mexico. The remains of his pregnant wife, their three-year-old daughter and a domestic worker were also found there. His six-year-old son survived after hiding. Two men were arrested, and the State of Mexico’s prosecutor’s office continues investigating the case.
