Far-right Serbian Radical Party to contest election alongside Vucic's SNS

Serbia's far-right Serbian Radical Party is joining the parliamentary election on the United Serbia list led by Aleksandar Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party, while backing the incumbent president as a candidate for prime minister.

The decision came from a meeting of the SRS Central Fatherland Administration. The party said it acted in the interests of preserving peace and stability, continuing major investment projects and safeguarding Serbia's constitutional order.

The radicals said they had spent the past two years resisting what they called attempts to carry out a color revolution in Serbia. They pledged to use all their party resources to prevent power from being taken in the streets and to block political forces whose decision-making center, in their view, lies abroad.

The SRS said Serbia must remain united in the face of major challenges. It expressed confidence that voters would show political maturity on October 25 and support what it described as prominent patriots for whom Serbia comes first.

Over the past two years, we, the Serbian Radicals, have actively resisted attempts to carry out a color revolution in Serbia, and we will mobilize all party capacities to prevent power in Serbia from being seized in the streets, as well as to prevent political forces whose decision-making center is abroad from coming to power in Serbia.

The party is known for hardline nationalism, Euroscepticism and support for Russia. It has publicly advocated creating a Greater Serbia across parts of the former Yugoslavia, and its members took part in the wars of the 1990s. Its founder, Vojislav Seselj, received a 10-year sentence from the Hague Tribunal in 2018 for crimes against humanity.

The SNS was founded in 2008 after a split in the SRS. The dispute involved then-deputy leader Tomislav Nikolic and Seselj over the European Union's Stabilisation and Association Agreement. Nikolic later founded the SNS, joined by then-SRS Secretary General Aleksandar Vucic.
