Farewell, Franz: Police Dog Who Came From Shelter Dies After Years of Service

Franz, a German Shepherd who served with the ATJ Lučko counter-terrorism unit, has died. For nine years, he was a dedicated member of the special forces, having been adopted from the City of Zagreb's Shelter for Abandoned Animals.

Franz quickly distinguished himself on the training grounds, becoming one of the unit's top working dogs. His handler, police officer Danijel Barišić, posted an emotional farewell on social media, recalling their journey together. "Nine years ago, you entered my life as a dog from the Dumovec shelter. No one could have known then that this German Shepherd would become one of the best official dogs and my most loyal partner," Barišić wrote.

Their partnership involved countless demonstrations, training with various police units, and thousands of kilometers traveled. Barišić described Franz as fearless and completely dedicated to his job on the field, always giving his all. "I knew you would do anything for me, just as I would do anything for you," he stated. However, behind this professional demeanor was a gentle giant. At home, Franz was calm and affectionate, a beloved member of the family who adored everyone.

Franz spent his final days at home, surrounded by love and attention, a comfort to Barišić. "What comforts me most is that you did not spend your last days in a kennel, but in your home, surrounded by love, care, and people who loved you with all their hearts," he wrote. Barišić expressed gratitude for every task completed, every moment shared, and the trust and unconditional love Franz provided.
