Farmers group seeks support for Tinubu’s agricultural transformation

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has called on farmers across the country to rally behind President Bola Tinubu's agricultural transformation agenda, aiming to unlock Nigeria's vast agricultural potential and significantly increase food production.

Nigeria is blessed with over 70 million hectares of farmlands in which some ungoverned spaces have hitherto been occupied by unfriendly enemies over time.

AFAN President Farouk Mudi emphasized the Federal Government's commitment to securing farmlands that were previously under the control of bandits. He noted that these coordinated security measures have provided much-needed relief to numerous farmers. "Nigeria is blessed with over 70 million hectares of farmlands in which some ungoverned spaces have hitherto been occupied by unfriendly enemies over time," Mudi stated. He added that the current administration's determination to secure these lands has been instrumental in the relief experienced by farmers.

Although the previous administration made serious efforts to reclaim those spaces, upon assumption of office, the determination of the present administration to secure those farmlands has been responsible for relief for many farmers arising from coordinated efforts of the security architecture being put in place by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Mudi highlighted a significant partnership between the Ministry of Defence and AFAN, describing it as a "game changer" for farmers. This collaboration has enabled many farmers to return to their lands and is facilitating the return of internally displaced persons to their communities. In recognition of these efforts, General Christopher Gwabin Musa was recently honored with the title of Patron of AFAN. The association also facilitated an agricultural study tour to Brazil for some of its executives, where they attended the annual Cotrijal trade exhibition to identify innovations for farmers and those in IDP camps.

This approach is commendable and in appreciation, General Christopher Gwabin Musa was conferred with the title of Patron of AFAN recently, which was widely celebrated in Abuja.

Looking ahead, AFAN is set to host the Nigerian-Brazilian International Agric Exhibition in November 2026, in collaboration with the Kano State Government and the Kano State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture. This initiative involves the Federal Ministries of Agriculture and Food Security, Livestock Development, Industry, Trade and Investment, and Foreign Affairs. The goal is to transition Nigeria's agriculture and livestock sectors from subsistence farming to mechanized practices, positioning the country as a major agricultural hub in West Africa.

The aim is to identify innovations on how to help our farmers go back to the farm, and develop more creative ways in helping those in IDP camps.
