Fatal Accident Leads to Cancellation of Soria Music Festival

An electronic music festival planned for Soria, Spain, has been denied permits following a fatal motorcycle accident at a different event held in the same town. The Iberia Eclipse Festival, scheduled for August 10-14, was set to coincide with a total solar eclipse.

The decision to deny the festival's permits came after a 24-year-old woman died following a motorcycle accident at the Motorbeach festival, an annual biker gathering in Vinuesa. This incident sparked controversy regarding alleged excesses associated with the event. The fallout from the Motorbeach festival has now placed the Iberia Eclipse Festival in a precarious position, despite organizers stating it has no connection to the previous incident.

Vinuesa's mayor, Juan Ramón García Marina, acknowledged that "innocent people will pay for sinners" due to the circumstances. He described the recent weeks in Vinuesa, a town whose summer population quintuples, as chaotic. The decision was influenced by a report from the regional government advising against such events due to fire risk and local distrust. Organizers, however, had secured initial authorization from the town council.

The Iberia Eclipse Festival, organized by seven international promoters led by Germany's Stelzinger GmbH, had advertised over 200 artists and sold nearly 1,500 tickets. Organizers highlighted the financial implications of cancellation, including international artists already in Spain and equipment rentals. Stelzinger GmbH has a history of organizing music festivals around solar eclipses, with past events in the U.S. attracting up to 50,000 people.

The Motorbeach festival, in its fourth year, had previously been a significant economic boon for Vinuesa, reportedly generating up to three million euros. However, this year's edition left a "indelible stain" on the municipality following the tragic death.
