Fatal crashes persist on Tucheng’s Baijie Road as New Taipei adjusts lanes and lowers speed limit

New Taipei has completed a package of traffic changes on Tucheng’s Baijie Road after a fatal crash, including a lower speed limit and restrictions on heavy trucks.

The section toward Banqiao, between Minquan Street and Jin’an Street, has been converted to mixed-use lanes. The Transportation Department also revised lane arrangements at both ends of the section and improved motorcycle waiting areas.

Officials said vehicles heading toward the Jin’an Street ramp previously had to move toward the outside lane, creating conflicts with cars and motorcycles traveling straight. The new arrangement gives drivers more room to change lanes before reaching the ramp and aims to reduce sudden movements near the entrance.

The speed limit on the section has been reduced to 40 kph, while graphic signs and warning boards have been added farther upstream. Because traffic volumes rise during the morning and afternoon peaks, and large vehicles need more room to turn, trucks weighing more than 15 tonnes are barred from turning right onto the Jin’an Street ramp from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. Trucks bound for Tucheng Industrial Park can use Yuanfu Street or Futian Road instead.

The department said the improvements have been completed and urged drivers to follow the road markings and signs, choose the correct lane early, avoid speeding and refrain from rushing through the area.
