Father dies saving elementary-school son in valley, while another rescuer also dies

A father in his 40s and another man died after entering a valley in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, to rescue an elementary-school child who had been swept away by the current.

The incident occurred at about 10:32 a.m. on the fifth. Nearby visitors and 119 rescuers pulled the two men from the water, but both were in cardiac arrest. Emergency workers performed CPR and took them to a nearby hospital, where they later died.

Another fatal incident was reported three minutes earlier at a beach near Hwanggeum Uljin Snow Crab Park in Giseong-myeon. Two men in their 50s reportedly failed to return to shore while swimming. Rescuers performed CPR and transported both to hospital, but they also died. They were reportedly not wearing life jackets.

Uljin County had sent a disaster-safety alert at 9:20 a.m., warning that swell waves had created a high risk of people being swept away along the entire east coast and urging people to avoid entering the water.

In Gumi, a man in his 60s was found dead beside the Nakdong River at 9:07 a.m., and a man in his 50s was found dead at a reservoir in Otae-dong at 12:48 p.m. Police were investigating the exact circumstances.
