Fathers' love saves children's lives through liver donations in Peru

In a remarkable display of paternal love, three fathers in Peru have donated portions of their livers to save their children's lives. These selfless acts of donation have given their children a second chance at life, underscoring the critical role of organ transplantation in modern medicine. The procedures were carried out at the prestigious Hospital Nacional Edgardo Rebagliati Martins, a leading medical center in the country.

The stories of Walter Almerco, Carlos Bastiand, and Américo Herrera exemplify the profound bond between parents and children. Walter Almerco's son, Yossimar, then five years old, urgently needed a liver transplant in 2017. Walter not only donated part of his liver but also dedicated himself to losing 20 kilograms to meet the medical requirements for the donation. Today, Yossimar is healthy and living a normal life, forever grateful for his father's sacrifice.

The medical and psychological support was fundamental throughout the entire process.

Similarly, Carlos Bastiand's son, Guillermo, faced a severe liver disease in 2021. Carlos stepped in as a donor, and Guillermo, now undergoing regular check-ups, is showing a favorable recovery. Américo Herrera's son, Alger, also received a life-saving liver transplant from his father in the same year, highlighting a decade of incredible medical achievement.

These three cases coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program at the Hospital Rebagliati. Over the past decade, the program has successfully performed 87 pediatric liver transplants, significantly improving the quality of life for numerous children suffering from complex liver conditions. The hospital emphasizes the continuous medical and psychological support provided to donors post-surgery, ensuring their long-term health and recovery as part of its specialized transplant services.
