Fatima Sana fined for send-off gesture in Women’s Asia Cup match against India

Fatima Sana’s send-off of Shafali Verma brought Pakistan’s captain a fine and another disciplinary point, even as her team’s match against India quickly turned into a rout. The International Cricket Council said Sana breached its code after gesturing toward the pavilion when the Indian opener was dismissed.

The incident occurred during Saturday’s Women’s Asia Cup clash. The ICC treated the gesture as a Level 1 offence under Article 2.5, which concerns “using language, actions or gestures which disparage, or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

Sana admitted the offence and accepted the proposed sanction from Supriya Rani Das of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, the ICC said. That meant no formal hearing was required. The two on-field umpires, along with the third and fourth umpires, levelled the charge.

The penalty amounted to 10% of Sana’s match fee, and one demerit point raised her total to two. Her previous offence during the relevant 24-month period came against Ireland in Dublin in August 2025. Level 1 offences can bring a penalty of up to 50% of a player’s match fee and one or two demerit points. Four or more points within the designated period convert into suspension points and can lead to a ban.

On the field, Sana had briefly threatened India’s chase by taking three early wickets, removing members of the top order. India nevertheless overwhelmed Pakistan, who were dismissed for 55, their lowest-ever score in T20 internationals, before completing the chase. Pakistan’s next Asia Cup match is against Hong Kong in Dubai, where they will seek to secure a semifinal berth.
